Week of March 21, 2021

On March 24, 2021 - My heart is to bring her back. I want to capture her history, her present and all of the things in between. In order to do this, I feel like I have figure out who lived here. Who loved here? Who felt heartbreak? How did it come to be? It’s wanting to connect with these people who must have loved her as much as we do.

I am not a historian, but I’m incredibly inquisitive. In all of those quiet moments, when you’re not sure what to do, I’m always drawn to typing “chateau beauvais” or “Bussiere-Dunoise” into Google to see what I will find. Every once in a while, I’ll find a snippet of a reference, a glimpse into her past and it feels like the universe has sent me a present. Last night was different. I found the most amazing article about Bussiere-Dunoise; about the past. It was an article about a historian who lives in the village.

Monsieur Michel Le Scouarnec was interviewed by lamontangne.fr. It was mainly about the work he has done capturing stories of soldiers of the commune who took part in the Great War, as well as their descendants. And while I snuggled into lovely details of the history of the village, I came across some incredible facts, and his email address

And here is where it gets special. Some more clues about our castle’s past. Right there, in the middle of the article, there was a reference to the “imposing Burdy family.” It is the name of the same family that is connected to the chateau. If you remember our plaque, Madame Marie Jouannet nee Burdy’s name is emblazoned on there, giving us our first clue as to who could have lived in this fairytale place. Stay tuned for more details!

On March 25, 2021 - Chateau de Joli Bois, formerly known as Chateau de Beauvais - her name changed one lovely evening when my friend Sarah and I were stargazing and pondering the universe and drinking some lovely wine.

We became fixated on the JB on the chimney which we know stands for Jouannet Burdy. We tried to come up with a name that was formed by those initials but still managed to capture the essence of the place.

Sarah came up with Joli Bois and I couldn't call her anything else after that.

. . .

On March 26, 2021 - Flashback Friday to Rosie at this beautiful lake in Bussiere-Dunoise. Oh, how we long to be back there under those blue skies, up to our elbows in rennovations and all the worry and excitement that comes with it! Soon enough, we'll be back. Until then, we have the memories.

. . .
